Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. Rei means spiritual wisdom, and ki means energy, so Reiki means spiritual energy. This healing modality is based on the belief that this universal life force energy flows through us and that when it is stagnant or blocked it creates distress and dis-ease.

Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.

photo of reiki sessionDuring a reiki session the practitioner serves as a vessel or conduit supplying healing universal life energy where it is most needed. This is done by the practitioner placing her hands non-intrusively in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body while the client is clothed and laying on a table or the floor. Although reiki is a hands-on healing treatment, it is not massage or reflexology.

Reiki flows to the areas of need supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself and restore balance. The purpose of a reiki treatment is to relieve stress and pain, induce relaxation, release emotional blockages, accelerate natural healing, and balance subtle bodies energies.

Reiki healing is being practiced in more than 800 hospitals in the US including such places as Johns Hopkins, has been proven to help heart attach patients at Yale, and is being popularized by Donna Karen’s Urban Zen Foundation.
